Death toll rises to 22 in central China highway accident

CHANGSHA, Sept. 25 -- The death toll of a highway accident on Friday in central China has risen to 22, after one more body was found, the local rescue headquarters said.

Thirteen people were injured when four vehicles collided on a highway in Hunan Province, central China.

The accident occurred at around 9:50 a.m. on a Hunan section of the highway linking Shanghai and Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province.

A semi-trailer lost control and collided with a light truck close by. They crashed through the central reservation together and hit a medium bus. The semi-trailer's front and the bus burst into flame. The accident also caused another vehicle to collide, according to the headquarters.

The driver and another passenger in the semi-trailer remain in police custody, it said.

The injured have been sent to hospital, and the road is being cleared of debris.
