What are Chinese scholars’ focus for Xi's US visit?
Chinese scholars get interviewed by People's Daily Online.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the USA starts on Sept. 22. This visit has attracted worldwide attention. What are the issues that Chinese scholars will be interested in the most? And what are the results they would expect to be achieved during this visit? People's Daily Online recently interviewed 10 renowned Chinese scholars who major in China-US relationship research, and had them answer the question about Xi's visit.

Su Ge, President of the China Institute of International Studies

The issue I care about the most of this visit is how the two Presidents would solve the question "Where is the China-US relationship heading?", since this is the first state visit of Xi paid to the United State as Chinese President, and the last one for President Obama to receive Chinese state visit delegation within his presidency.

Ruan Zongze, Vice President of the China Institute of International Studies

Since this year a big debate has been held in the US about its policies towards China. I think President Xi is going to face up to a more complicated public opinion environment. A state visit is especially important when people start to develop different opinions about the China-US relationship. We need to send out the signal that China and the United States can be cooperative partners, which is also what I expect the most.

Yuan Peng, Vice President of the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations

I think the two Presidents would pay most attention to during this visit the big global issues like the economy, since a mutual benefit and win-win structure between the biggest and second biggest economy can lead the world economy to prosperity; and do not let issues on cyber-security and South China Sea etc. override those more important and international problems.

Da Wei, Director of the Department for American Studies of China Institute of Contemporary International Relations

My biggest expectation would be solving American people's two questions: "Who is he?" and "What is his vision?" The explanation on President Xi's style and his vision on the China-US relationship is closely related to the strategic judgment of Americans on China and President Xi himself.

Wang Yizhou, Vice President of the School of International Studies of Peking University

My own biggest interest in President Xi's visit this time is to observe China's position in today's international system. Though there are some troubles between China and the United States, I do not think it is wise to grapple on some of the controversial issues. Instead, I hope people can use a long vision to look at this state visit.

Wu Xinbo, Vice President of School of International Studies of Fudan University

What I care about the most is whether President Xi's visit would clear away the negative atmosphere between China and the US, and make cooperation instead of divergence the theme of the China-US relationship.

Jin Canrong, Vice President of School of International Studies of Renmin University of China

As far as I am concerned, this visit will be worthwhile as long as the people of the US can feel the charm of our Chinese leaders' personalities, and this visit can leave one or two impressive things.

Zhou Wenzhong, former Chinese Ambassador to the United States, part-time professor of Jilin University and Nankai University

Cyber-security has been remained as an important issue both for China and the US. The fact is that both countries are victims of network attacks, and China and the US should work together to solve this issue of cyber-security. The cooperation between the two countries in fighting against network crimes is in accordance with the fundamental interests of the people of both countries.

Teng Jianqun, Director of Department for American Studies of China Institute of International Studies

For the recent years China's rapid development has made the US uneasy, and it seems like the States also do not understand China's President's governing ideas. What I expect the most is that the two countries can strengthen mutual trust through this visit.

Yang Xiyu, researcher of China Institute of International Studies

A new model of major-country relationship between China and the United States is a strategic framework with long term significance. However since the US government is about to change the President, and more new complicated elements have emerged in the China-US relationship, the new model of relationship is facing a lot of challenges. I would pay more attention to see whether this new model of relationship is going to be carried on.
