Chinese citizen’s scientific literacy improved greatly

A survey report on Chinese citizen's scientific literacy released Sept. 19 by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) shows that in 2015, 6.20 percent of Chinese citizen are scientifically literate, nearly doubled from the 3.27 percent in 2010, and has fulfilled the goal that Chinese people's scientific literacy exceeds 5 percent by the end of 2015, People's Daily reported.

According to the survey, the scientific literacy level of Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin citizens are the highest, 18.71 percent, 17.56 percent and 12.00 percent respectively. In terms of age groups, young and middle-aged people have the highest scientific literacy: the 18-29 age group at 11.59 percent and the 30-39 age group at 7.16 percent. The scientific literacy level of urban residents has risen from 4.86 percent in 2010 to 9.72 percent; the scientific literacy of rural residents has risen only from 1.83 percent to 2.43 percent. The scientific literacy level of male Chinese citizens has reached 9.04 percent, higher than the 3.38 percent of female citizens.

53.4 percent of Chinese citizens obtain scientific and technological information through the internet and mobile, much increased from 26.6 percent in 2010 and exceeded newspaper (38.5 percent) and is now only next to television (93.4 percent).
