“The establishment of a new model of major-country relations needs joint efforts of both the US and China,”Teng Jianqun, director of the Department for American Studies at the China Institute of International Studies told People’s Daily in an interview.

Firstly, the two sides should strive to build up a new model of political relations in which they seek common points while reserving difference and be tolerant with and learn from each other, said Teng.

Secondly, the two sides should try to achieve a new model of economic relations which can realize mutual benefit and win-win results and orderly competition.

Thirdly, the two sides should develop a new model of military relations in which they don’t see each other as enemies and jointly bear responsibilities, added Teng.

“The US must accustom itself tothinking of China as a necessary part of the equation leading to peace and development. The US and China need to listen to each other more carefully,”said Douglas H. Paal, vice president for Studies and Director of the Asia program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Kavi Chongkittavorn, senior fellow at Institute of Security and International Studies,Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, pointed out,“to attain the much heralded new model of major-country relations between China and the US, the two should build on their past cooperation and achievements. ”

“The two countries’ collaboration on the Iran nuclear deal was a good case in point that there was a meeting of mind between the two powers. It took patience and extraordinary efforts to sustain such collaboration. Other challenges included the cooperation on climate change and Ebola pandemics,”said Chongkittavorn.

“Both China and the US are willing to tackle these problemstogether. This common endeavor should be further nurtured so that it can be widen to include other strategic issues. Obviously, it would take times to create the kind of understanding and energy that would transform into action on more sensitive matters,”he added.

Chongkittavorn stressed that both countries must not shy away from regional efforts related to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

“To be more specific, China and the US have to support the ASEAN centrality in the emerging regional security architecture. It is imperative that both major powers strongly support ASEAN-led security forum including ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Summit and ASEAN Defense Minister Meeting Plus,”added Chongkittavorn.
