Seven Killed, Hundreds Injured in Massive explosions in Tianjin, China

Seven people were killed and hundreds were injured Wednesday night in two massive explosions caused by flammable goods at a container terminal in northern China’s Tianjin municipality.

The number of injured could not be confirmed but hundreds were reportedly injured based on local department information and reports sent by local residents who used Weibo (China’s twitter) to send messages and photos and videos of the blaze.

They said the explosion have shattered windows doors, shook their apartment buildings and sent people to the streets. Some have reported chemical gas leaks.

Two firefighters battling the blaze are missing and six are slightly wounded. Six fire brigades are on the scene and the fire is nearly out.

The Tianjin Fire Department reported that the fire began about 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday local time, and two explosions followed within 30 seconds of each other. About 100 fire trucks have been sent to the scene, the department said.

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the first explosion had a 2.3 degree magnitude (equivalent to 3 tons of TNT), and the second had a 2.9 degree magnitude (equivalent to 21 tons of TNT).

According to the Tianjin Public Security Bureau, the explosion happened at the Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co. Ltd., which handles the transport of hazardous goods.
