China's Political Influence Limited Despite Its $46 Billion investment in U.S.

China’s investment in the United States has reached 46 billion U.S. dollars, according to a recent report published by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and Rhodium Group.

The report, entitled “New Neighbors: Chinese Investment in the U.S. by Congressional District,” says that most of the Chinese investment in the U.S. has taken place over the past five years, and not only has the money gone to such big cities as New York and Chicago, but also has been invested in medium-sized and smaller cities.

Tang Yu, a young businesswoman from Nantong, China’s eastern province of Jiangsu, has been one of these investors who ventured out to the United States.

Describing herself as a “Sino-American amphibian,” Tang flies back and forth between Nantong and Los Angeles frequently each year in an effort to sell her company’s household textile products such as bed sheets, bedcovers and pillows to the American market.

Tang has achieved considerable success as her company’s products are sold both at Macy’s and on Amazon.com. “In the U.S., there is a 100 billion-dollar market for household textile products,” said Tang, implying that there is no reason for her not to take a bite from such a huge “cake.”

Tang only represents the tip of an iceberg in terms of China’s investment in U.S., which has become one of the most attractive countries for Chinese investors in recent years. In 2014 alone, the Chinese investment in the U.S. totaled 60 million dollars.

Of the 50 states in the U.S., the investment by Chinese enterprises has covered 43 states. But it has not significantly influenced the American people’s life, according to experts.

Diao Daming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that China’s investment has had little political influence in the U.S. largely because it has not brought much tangible benefits to the local people, especially in terms of creating job opportunities.

It has been no easy task for Chinese enterprises to create jobs for Americans mainly because of the much higher cost of labor than that in China. Haier Group, which has operated its business overseas for many years, only created 1,250 jobs in South Carolina even though their investment there had reached 126 million dollars.

To have more political influence, Diao said, Chinese enterprises need to invest more in those areas that are closely related to the daily life of American people and are likely to create jobs.
