Jack Ma, chairman of Alibaba Group, was elected co-chairman of Netmundial Initiative at the first Plenary Council held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on June 30, 2015. He was the only Asian co-chairman.
"This reflets the trust for China's Internet and the governing capacity of China Internet." Ma said after the election that he would devote himself to promoting innovation and development of the Internet, making young people and small enterprises benefit more from it.
Netmundial Initiative was co-launched by ICANN, Brazilian internet body CGI.br and World Economic Forum. The alliance devotes to establishing open discussion platforms for online Internet governance solutions, providing convenience for global communities to discuss Internet governance, show governance programs and study the solutions of Internet related issues.
In January 2015, the alliance elected 20 committee members. Lu Wei, Director of China National Internet Information office and Jack Ma were in the list.
At the meeting, Lu Wei comprehensively expounded on President Xi Jinping's proposition of international Internet governance and introduced the development status and governance practice of China's Internet, which was highly endorsed by the participants from all over the world.
