China and the U.S. ended the two-day Seventh Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) and Sixth High-level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) on last Wednesday with 127, 70 and 119 outcomes involving strategy, economy and people-to-people exchange respectively. This indicates that China-US ties are growing warmer, more resilient, and deeper in the process of building a new-type of major power relationship.

Health cooperation was included in the CPE mechanism for the first time. The Chinese Ministry of Science and the American Heart Association signed a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of a cardiopulmonary aid training program in China. Cooperation in health between the two sides will benefit the citizens of both countries as well as the wider world, John Meiners, Executive Vice President for Emergency Cardiovascular Care of the Heart Association told People's Daily in an interview.

As a newly-added group meeting, the special session on marine cooperation has been one of the highlights of the S&ED. A number of concrete results were achieved in the meeting, such as establishing a fishery protection working group and reaching agreements to protect the Antarctic oceans.

The S&ED has met expectations, said Douglas H. Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to People's Daily. Further concrete results will be reached during Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to the United States in September of this year, he added.

People-to-people exchange will gradually make its impact felt over the long term, cultivating goodwill and understanding between the two peoples, and this positive trend will filter upwards and ultimately influence the decision-making level, said Kenneth Lieberth, the former Director of the John L. Thornton China Center in Brookings Institute.

After the seventh round of the S&ED and the sixth round of CPE, Sino-US relations have taken a significant step forward. Future dialogue can be more constructive, frank, and pragmatic, and conducted in an atmosphere of greater mutual respect and greater peace of mind. China has become a more proactive participant as a builder of and contributor to the international system.
