Bao Gui, 13, and Bao Weihui, 12, are brothers living in the small village of Nanchong, Sichuan province. They lost their parents when they were babies. Despite the fact that they have to feed chickens and pigs and take care of their grandma after school, they still do well in their studies and are praised by their teachers and neighbors.
Their mother abandoned them and their father when they were very young. Then their father went off to find their mother. Finally he found her, but failed to persuade her to come back with him. He felt so desperate that he killed himself. One year later, their mother died of a difficult labor in childbirth. The brothers were brought up by their grandpa and grandma. Unfortunately, this year their grandpa died after collapsing in a field.
Their grandma is 65 years old and is afflicted with eye disease. She has worked hard to raise the brothers. She now has a lung condition and is unable to work in winter. To support the family, the brothers have to do the farm work after school.
The brothers have grown and harvested 300 kilograms of maize and 1,000 kilograms of sweet potatoes this year. To earn extra money, the brothers also raise chicken, ducks and pigs.
