Do not point the finger at China’s internal affairs

Even at the year end, talk of China is still buzzing. According to Canadian media reports, China has secretly established an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the South China Sea. And the Kyodo News Agency’s "exclusive news" has reported that China is building up a military base on Nanji Island in the East China Sea.

Such hyperbole is nothing new in the western media. Developed countries all criticized China for establishing the ADIZ in the East China Sea in November 2013. Since then, speculation on the possibility of an ADIZ in the South China Sea has never stopped. Japan's media always enjoy their "military topics", and the "China threat" is an eternal theme.

The ADIZ system originated from the US and Canada. Canada requires aircraft which transit its ADIZ but do not enter its territorial space to notify their flight information, which is no different from China. Meanwhile, Japan has caused provocation by first "nationalizing" the Diaoyu Islands, and then openly intensifying its military deployment around the islands. The Diaoyu Islands are Chinese territory, so we have every reason to build up a military base on Nanji Island which is 300 kilometers from the Diaoyu Islands. Is it proper that Japan should intensify its military deployment on Yonaguni Island which is only 170 kilometers from a Chinese island?

There are reasons why Canada and Japan keep a close watch on China. Canada has no direct security issues with China due to the long distance between the two countries, so we are naturally led to think about the US, Canada’s most important ally. The Canadian government has always regarded its relationship with the US as the cornerstone of Canadian foreign policies.

Japan has two objectives. On the one hand, the Japanese government is trying to get rid of the constraints imposed by the post-war order. Japan needs reasons to amend the constitution and enhance its military power, and the "China threat" is a perfect excuse. On the other hand, by overstating the danger of "losing" the Diaoyu Islands to China, Japan secured confirmation from the US that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States of America and Japan is applicable to the Diaoyu Islands, so Japan can carry out joint military exercises with the US, with the eventual goal of seizing the Diaoyu Islands.

The accuracy and objectivity of the reports of Western media have yet to be verified. But more importantly, Canada, Japan and even the US all forget one unshakable rule: the ADIZ and the military base are the internal affairs of China. China is a sovereign state, with the right to built up military bases on its territory, establish ADIZ according to international laws, or take other measures. Other countries have no right to point a finger.
