SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 12-- A county official in north China's Hebei Province was tried for allegedly accepting bribes of 100 million yuan (16.1 million U.S. dollars), sources with the local judicial system said on Friday.

Bian Fei, former Communist Party of China (CPC) secretary of Daming County, had his case heard by the Intermediate People's Court in Shijiazhuang, Hebei provincial capital.

He was accused of accepting bribes totalling more than 59.3 million yuan while serving as the Party chief in three counties. In addition, 42.9 million yuan of his assets cannot be attributed to any legitimate source, prosecutors said.

Bian was also accused of power abuse that cost the state 7.7 million yuan.

The prosecutors said Bian secured promotion, project approvals and construction tenders for others in return for money.

No verdict has been delivered yet.

Bian's driver also faced charges of accepting bribes and withholding evidence.

The driver, surnamed Wang, accepted 500,000 yuan in bribes, according to the prosecutors.

Under Bian's orders, Wang also tried to hide Bian's ill-gotten gains after Bian was put under investigation by the Party's discipline watchdog, prosecutors said.
