Editor's note: Behind the scenes of China’s underdeveloped rock music industry, many rock musicians struggle with poverty and obscurity as they give their all to their rock music dream.

Gu Xu, 29, is one of these rock artists. Ever since he was introduced to music by chance in high school, Gu hasn’t been able to shake his love of rock music. Gu organized a campus band with his friends as soon as he went to the university, and they had a lot of fun together. After graduating from university, all of Gu’s bandmates had to give up their rock dreams and get ordinary jobs. However, Gu still held fast to his rock dream, which he continued to pursue when resigning from a network in Tianjin after working there for several months. Ultimately, he joined the band Dream Spirit as a professional rock musician known for his great guitar skills and his insistence on upholding the spirit of rock music.
Hard work finally pays off! Recently, Dream Spirit has found an agent and recorded their first album. “After pursuing this dream for so many years, it is not important to get famous. Doing my favorite thing has made me happy. For me, rock music can’t just be described as a simple hobby or a job or a dream. It is my life,” Gu says.
