PHNOM PENH, Oct. 29 -- Cambodian police have arrested a fugitive U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Harris, 34, in the Kratie province of eastern Cambodia after being on the run in the country for the past two weeks, a senior police officer confirmed Wednesday.
"Our police caught the suspect Tuesday at noon while he was driving a motorbike with packed saddlebags," Oum Phy, deputy police chief of Kratie province, told Xinhua over telephone.
He said the arrest was made at the order of the Interior Ministry's immigration department and the suspect was sent to the department's detention facility in Phnom Penh Tuesday evening.
Harris deserted the U.S. Army and skipped bail in January in Orlando, Florida, where he was awaiting trial on 44 counts of child pornography possession, indecent acts on a child and forced sodomy.
The suspect fled to Cambodia where he worked as a dog trainer in coastal Preah Sihanouk province.
According to Oum Phy, the suspect would be deported to the U.S. to face charges.
