NANCHANG, Oct. 22 -- The death toll from a scaffolding collapse in east China's Jiangxi Province rose to six after two more bodies were recovered, said local authorities on Wednesday.
The temporary framework crumbled at around 1:30 p.m. Monday in a private hotel under construction in Xin'gan County, trapping 12 workers. Firefighters pulled out 10 people from the site on the same day, with four pronounced dead after unsuccessful attempts to save them.
Local media quoted a worker as saying that the scaffolding collapsed with the building surface. The last body was found at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In a separate case, two workers were killed in northwest China's Gansu Province after they fell off the ninth floor of a building.
The workers were painting the exterior of the building in the Huixian County of Longnan City at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, when the cradle tilted. They landed on the first floor before rescuers sent them to the hospital, and died there after medical treatment failed.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
