GABORONE, Oct. 17 -- Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana on Friday donated 175,000 pula (about 20,000 U.S. dollars) to a local NGO The Eagle Trust, to empower young people with disabilities through a life skill project.
The charity was established in 2012 by Chinese people in Botswana to fulfill their social responsibility by supporting the cause of youth empowerment, poverty alleviation and skills training. So far, the total amount of donations made by the association has accumulated to over 2 million pula.
"I'm confident that through this project, these children and youth with disabilities will receive proper training on life skills and therefore their quality of lives will be improved greatly," said Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Zheng Zhuqiang.
According to the ambassador, The Eagle Trust of Botswana and Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana will carry out the Life Skill Project jointly under the China-Africa People-to-People Friendship Action.
The action, officially launched by the Chinese government in 2013, aims at encouraging and supporting non-governmental organizations and women, teenagers and civil organizations from the two countries to develop exchanges and cooperation.
China is ready to provide assistance to NGOs from two countries, support relevant self-service programs and make contributions to Botswana's social development, said the ambassador.
Miles Nan, Chairman of Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana said Chinese community in Botswana want to be a leading example to all other foreigners here to contribute towards the needy.
The donation was highly appreciated by Botswana Acting Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Vincent Seretse who said that the association has set an example for the business community in Botswana.
