Survey: How do Chinese people see the country’s great changes?

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of P.R. China. In the past six and a half decades, China has experienced great changes. How do Chinese people feel about those changes? A recent survey conducted by China Youth News shows that 84.8 percent of the interviewees agree that China has undergone tremendous change in recent years. Of the 2037 interviewees, 6.1 percent were born post-1990, 34.6 percent were born in the 80s, 36.7 percent were born in the 70s, and 22.6 percent were born before 1970.

Zhu Wenwen is a college girl who loves on-line shopping. Now, she can buy most of the products and services she needs on line. From her point of view, it suggests that the business environment of China has improved. "New business patterns are put into practice and innovated rapidly in China, something that was inconceivable in the past," she says.

Compared with young people, seniors pay more attention to their health. Wen Shuzhen, 67, is satisfied with the current community service. "Our community will organize a free physical examination for people over 65 every year," she says. "That is very important for seniors to keep fit."

When asked about changes in international communication, 57.8 percent of the interviewees felt that outbound tourism is growing in popularity.

Ms. Sun, a tour guide in Beijing, used to guide domestic tours. But now, the ever-increasing outbound travel business has encouraged her to learn Korean, preparing to deal with outbound tours.

The survey also shows that 51.5 percent of the interviewees find trans-national marriages are increasing in popularity, and 44.4 percent of them find more foreigners are coming to work and live in China.

Along with these changes, Chinese people have become more positive. 52.4 percent of the interviewees said that they feel prouder of being a Chinese.

What changes are most expected by Chinese people in future?

58.2 percent of the interviewees hope that they will no longer worry about food safety, 47.7 percent of them hope the environment will improve and air pollution will reduce, and 32.5 percent of them long for better medical insurance. 33.9 percent of the interviewees hope the overall quality of the Chinese people will improve along with their international image, 27 percent of them want affordable housing, and 20.3 percent of them hope that their children can get equal access to education.
