Visiting Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar

Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar, together with Borobudur Temple Compunds in Indonesia and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, are called oriental artistic treasures.

Myanmar people call Shwedagon Pagoda "Rui Daguang Tower". Rui means gold in their language, and Daguang is the ancient name of Rangoon. Myanmar people regard Shwedagon Pagoda as their pride.

Shwedagon Pagoda was first built in 585 with only 20 meters height and has gone through several renovations in many dynasties.

Shwedagon Pagoda is made of bricks. Its body is 112 meters high, with more than 1,000 pieces of gold leaves made of 7 tons of gold. The gold was donated by people in different walks of life.

More than 15,000 gold and silver bells hang on the tower. When the wind blows, the clear sweet sound floats into the distance. The roof of the tower is made of gold, surrounded by 664 rubies, 551 emeralds, and 443 diamonds. The whole gold tower is glittering and magnificent.
