Hong Kong's radical opposition camp must be very disappointed these days. The US has only taken a vague stance on the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on political reform in Hong Kong. The UK avoided giving any direct position, only planning to carry out an "inquiry" into the Hong Kong issue.

Many influential media outlets in Hong Kong in their Monday editorials sought to persuade the pan-democratic camp either to accept the NPC's decision or keep communicating with the central government. They stated explicitly that they don't want Hong Kong to be dragged into chaos. These remarks also frustrated the radical opposition.

A handful of Western media outlets alleged that Hong Kong risks the reoccurrence of the 1989 political event. However, they are exaggerating the influence of the radical opposition group, which is exerting themselves to the utmost to display their resolution on confronting the central government, but they have attracted much less support than anticipated.

There are limited options for the radical opposition camp. They have to either make a turn, redesigning their tactics, or continue confronting the central government. By sticking to the second option, they will end up in failure.

The radical opposition camp has held Hong Kong hostage for a long time. They manipulated the political discussion among the Hong Kong public and dominated public discourse there.

They eroded the tradition of rationality and the rule of law, permeating radicalism and populism into Hong Kong's ideology.

Largely due to radical forces, Chinese mainlanders in recent years have developed some negative feelings toward Hong Kong. Some Hong Kong extremists staged the "anti-locust" protests and even broke into People's Liberation Army barracks in Hong Kong.

Radical forces exposed the extremism and disorder under democracy. Mainlanders once admired Hong Kong's clean governance and rule of law, but the political reality there is in fact astonishing.

The opposition camp plays a certain role, but they are narrow-minded. They lack political understanding and judgment, as well as the spirit of compromise.

It's risky for small societies like Hong Kong and Taiwan to operate Western-style politics.

This is one of the most profound impressions the mainland has of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Some mainlanders still view Hong Kong and Taiwan as successful models of Western-style democracy. We hope Hong Kong can maintain its status as an economic hub.

This depends on the performance of the radical opposition camp. They are the weakness of Hong Kong society. And they should learn a lesson from the ongoing tensions.
