BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Yao Mugen, former vice governor of east China's Jiangxi Province, is under investigation for alleged bribe-taking, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said in a statement Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the Communist Party of China (CPC) announced that Yao was stripped of his CPC membership for "serious violation of discipline and law."

The CCDI said in a statement that Yao was found to have taken advantage of his position to seek favors for others and received huge bribes himself or through his relatives.

The State Council, or China's cabinet, approved a decision to dismiss Yao from public office, according to the statement.

The CCDI announced in March that Yao was under investigation for suspected disciplinary and law violations.

He was removed from his post in April.
