HARBIN, July 21  -- Two people died and 2,150 were evacuated after rainstorms battered villages in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province over the weekend, the local government said on Monday.

The heaviest rainstorm since 1915 hit Keshan County on Saturday night, destroying 171 homes, 79 roads and 38 bridges, the county government said in a press release.

Two villagers were washed away by torrential rain, and died, it said.

Meanwhile, 2,150 people had to abandon their homes and move to safer places, the release said.

Eleven out of all the 15 townships in the county were seriously affected by the weather. A total of 23,800 hectares of cropland was destroyed.

Residents have been warned of further disasters.

The National Meteorological Center has also forecast heavy rain or rainstorms in most parts of northeast China as well as central and northern provinces of north China from Sunday to Tuesday.

In some areas, average precipitation is forecast to reach 100 to 150 mm, the center said in a statement issued on Sunday.
