Hukou Falls is well-known landmark along the Yellow River. The great momentum generated by its strong currents has often been viewed as a symbol of the Chinese ethos. To the east of the falls is the town of Hukou, in Ji county, which is in the city of Linfen, Shanxi province; to the west of it is Hukou village, Yichuan county, Yan'an city in Shaanxi province. It's around a five-to-six-hour ride into Taiyuan province and about a two-hour ride from Xi'an.
It is here that the Yellow River is flanked by steep cliffs, narrowing its stream to the width of the spout of a kettle, hence its name: Hukou Falls. The falls' drop is nine meters tall and generates a huge amount of hydro-power.
Hukou Falls is the second-largest waterfall in China.
