US Retaliation Should Not Harm Innocent People: Austria

Austrian President Thomas Klestil said Thursday that US retaliatory moves should avoid harming innocent people, the APA news agency reported.

While it is understandable that the U.S. should take all measures against the perpetrators of last week's terrorist attacks, it should avoid harming innocent people, Klestil told a forum.

The fight against terrorism needs a long-term strategy rather than a short-term military operation, he told The Standard newspaper. He expressed his hope that Washington would exercise caution and consult extensively with its allies before taking military action.

Last week, the president expressed concern over Bush's indication that both the terrorists and those who harbor them would be punished.

It's dangerous to take military action against a whole nation, for many innocent people would be involved, Klestil told Austrian television last Friday.
