US Carrier Kitty Hawk Leaves Japan

US aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk on Friday left Japan and is believed to head for the Indian Ocean in an apparent reaction to the deadly terrorist attacks last week, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) ships escorted Kitty Hawk as it left the port, the report said.

The US military declined to confirm the destination of the 81, 123-ton aircraft carrier, which houses 75 planes and 2,800 crew members.

The US side notified Japanese government that the carrier will conduct taking off and landing drills on Iwojima Island, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo.

Several other US warships have left Japan after the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York last week, including guided- missile cruiser Cowpens, guided-missile destroyer Curtis Wilbur, missile-cruiser Vincennes, and destroyer Cushing with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
