The Sudan's deputy defense minister and 13 other high-ranking military officers were killed Wednesday in a plane crash in the southern part of the country.

The Associated Press quoted Sudanese military spokesman Lieutenant General Mohammed Bashir Osman as saying that the crash, occurring shortly after take-off, was caused by bad weather.

Those killed in the crash included one general, seven lieutenant generals, three brigadiers, a colonel, a lieutenant colonel and a corporal.

At the same time, 16 people on the plane survived the crash.
