Germans Still Mistrust Euro, Survey Says

German public still do not have much confidence in Euro, which is scheduled to replace Deutsche Mark by the end of this year, according the Allensbach Institute of Opinion Research.

In a poll released on Saturday, 20 percent of the 2,094 people surveyed in March expressed "great" or "very great" confidence in the European single currency, as compared with 37 percent two years ago.

Those who had "no" or "hardly" confidence in Euro were 26 percent, nine percentage points higher than in January 1999.

But the percentage of " a little confidence" also rose from 33 percent to 47 percent, the survey indicated.

About 60 percent of the respondents told poll takers that the introduction of Euro was not a good decision.
