Anhui to Invest 16 Billion Yuan in Infrastructure

East China's Anhui Province plans to invest 16 billion yuan (1.9 billion U.S. dollars) in infrastructure construction this year, the key areas being highways, water supply and environmental protection.

The province is to embark on eight highway building projects at a total cost of eight billion yuan, including a bridge over the Yangtze River at the important transportation hub of Anqing, a highway along the Yangtze, and an expressway linking this provincial capital and the important railway hub of Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province.

Investment in water supply is estimated at about three billion yuan, including a flood-control project and a major reservoir.

Upon completion, the Linhuaigang flood-control project will contribute greatly to flood control on the middle and lower reaches of the Huaihe River, while the reservoir will enable Hefei to withstand exceptional floods.

Some five billion yuan will be invested in urban sewage treatment in the Huaihe River valley to help restore the ecological environment of the river, now notorious for pollution.
