Foreigners who live and work in Shanghai can be free of worrying about their children going to school now.

The latest sources from Shanghai Education Committee indicate that so far there have been as many as 25 international schools set up to provide special education for children from alien lands.

The said international schools fall into three categories: some of them were established by authorized foreign institutions, foreign-funded companies, offices of international organizations or some ratified foreign residents in China. This comes to a total of 16 schools like Shanghai American School, Shanghai Japanese School, Shanghai German School, Shanghai French School, etc. The second type is the international sector carved out in Shanghai local schools and so far such schools come to five in all. Besides, some foreign institutions or individuals launched a type of training centers in Shanghai, which can be put into the third category. In addition to the aforesaid, part of these schools also teach international courses mainly in English and in British way, while others may approach it according to different instructions outlined by different countries. Roughly 5000 students are reported being taught in these 25 international schools.

Among the faculty members in these schools, foreign teachers accounted for a greater part. However, there are also some local teachers engaged in charge of lecturing on Chinese culture and history.
