US Says Ties with Japan Not Damaged by Sub Collision

The United States said on Thursday that its relations with Japan have not been damaged by the recent incident in which a US submarine sank a Japanese trawler off Hawaii.

"I don't believe that the submarine incident has damaged US- Japanese relations, which after all go back a very, very long way, " a senior US official said.

"It is my great hope that what has been a very close and fruitful relationship is not going to be hurt in the long term," she added.

The USS Greeneville, a nuclear-powered submarine, sank the Japanese trawler off Hawaii last Friday. Nine people from the Japanese boat have been missing.
