Wahid's Younger Brother Urges Him to Hand Power to Megawati

Salahuddin Wahid, the younger brother of President Abdurrahman Wahid, said in a newspaper report published Monday that the president should hand over power to Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, saying that could be the best way to deal with worsening political tensions in Indonesia.

"In such a heated political climate, one must give away and compromise," the English-language daily Jakarta Post quoted Salahuddin, deputy chairman of the 40-million-strong Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama, as saying. The president is a former chairman of the group.
