The Chinese capital of Beijing scored a total of 144.33 billion yuan (US$17.38 billion) in social retail sales in 2000, an increase of 9.9 percent over the previous year.
The city's added value in the commercial sector had reached 30. 22 billion yuan (US$3.64 billion) by November of last year, up 6.2 percent over the same period of 1999.
Beijing enhanced adjustment and reform of business areas in 2000, with a group of characteristic commercial streets and centers formed.
Re-grouping and reform of large commercial enterprises also contributed to the sustained, fast and healthy development of the local commercial sector, officials said.
