Anti-Corruption Move Fruitful in Chinese Capital

Some 210 million yuan worth of public property was saved from the hands of corrupt officials in the national capital last year, thanks to the efforts by local anti-corruption departments.

In 2000, local procuratorates handled 1,293 corruption cases, up 17 percent over the previous year. Of these cases, 386 were put under public prosecution, up by 23 percent year-on-year.

A number of government officials, including 90 division-level officials and 28 at bureau-level, as well as 279 officials from state-owned companies were persecuted.

Local anti-corruption forces have focused on corruption cases in the banking, securities and real estate sectors. These cases mainly involved heavy loss of state property and infringement upon farmers' rights and interests.

This year, local procurators will reinforce their efforts to crack down on crimes committed by officials abusing their powers.
