Movie Box Office Reaches 100 Million Yuan in Shanghai

The movie box office in Shanghai has amounted to 100 million yuan (approximately US$12 million) and will see an estimated 5 percent increase by the yearend over that of last year, according to the statistics released lately by Shanghai movie distributors and theater owners. This is the first time for the movie market to warm up from a consecutive downturn in the last three years.

According to a report carried on Xinmin Evening News, Shanghai's largest circulated and most popular newspaper, China's movie distribution system reform in 1994 helped the re-flourishing of the film market. The box office in Shanghai of that year reached 170 million yuan. In the following two years, the box office kept on growing, hitting a record high of 240 million yuan in 1996. But from 1997, the movie market began dampening and the box office has been on the decline ever since.

Analysts here say that this year's rising in box office can be attributed to three factors. First, more attractive foreign movies have been introduced into Shanghai this year. Secondly, homemade masterpieces, such as "Choice between Life and Death", have also brought moviegoers back to cinemas and the establishment of a batch of modern movie theatres is thought to be the third factor helping heft the box office.
