Reported HIV Infections Reach 1,491 in HK

Forty-five persons were found positive in HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) antibody tests in the third quarter of 2000, bringing the total number of reported HIV infections in Hong Kong to 1,491, the Department of Health said on November 23.

Twelve new AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) cases were reported in the same quarter, bringing to a total of 487 confirmed AIDS cases reported since 1985.

Of the 45 new HIV cases reported, 31 acquired the infection via heterosexual contacts and seven via homosexual or bisexual contacts, said Consultant S S Lee of the Department of Health.

The 45 HIV cases comprised 33 males and 12 females, representing a ratio of 2.8 to 1. And the 12 new AIDS cases involved nine males and three females, Lee said.

China Has More HIV Carriers

As evident of China's rapid increase in the cases of HIV carriers, the Health Ministry said On October 31 the total reported cases had reached 20,711 by the end of September, up 37 percent from a year earlier.

Among them 741 have developed into AIDS patients and 397 died from the disease, said the ministry.
