China to Renovate Large Irrigation Project
China will invest 3.8 billion yuan to renovate one of its largest irrigation projects in east China's Anhui province.
First built in 1958, the Pishihang irrigation area is situated on hilly land, irrigating a total area of 800,000 hectares, about one sixth of the total cultivated land in the province. Grain production in the irrigation area is about one third of the total in the province.
However, this irrigation project lacks subsidiary projects and has reported severe water losses due to a shortage of funds when it was first built.
The first phase of the renovation will end in year 2005, costing 1.424 billion yuan.
