Israel Extends Ultimatum to Palestinians

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak decided on Tuesday to extend the 48-hour ultimatum to the Palestinians, which expired hours ago, said his spokesman Nachman Shai.

Emerging from a Cabinet meeting, Shai also announced that Barak would attend a US-hosted Mideast summit if one was called.

"We will act to restore calm to the extent that it depends on us, while also giving (Palestinian Leader) Yasser Arafat a certain additional time to do what he needs to do. There is intense international diplomatic activity which we cannot reject or ignore," he said.
