New Sony Subsidiary in Wuxi

The Japanese Sony Corporation will set up a new company this month in Wuxi city in east China's Jiangsu Province, with an initial investment of 23 million US dollars.

The Sony Electronics (Wuxi) Ltd, a wholly owned company of Sony (China) Ltd, is expected to start producing lithium ion polymer rechargeable batteries and other mobile phone equipment in April 2001 at the monthly production capacity of two million units, according to Saturday's Chinadaily.

The thin and lightweight batteries developed by Sony are used for mobile phones and other devices such as digital video cameras and notebook PCs.

In recent years, mobile phones have been increasingly popular in the world. By the end of May this year, there were about 36.9 million mobile phone users in China.
