Health Department to Work Out Smoking-control Action Program
The Chinese health department will work out a national action program for tobacco control to effectively restrain health problems caused by the spread of tobacco and economic losses.
It's reported that China is the world's largest tobacco producer and consumer, and over 63 percent of the male adults and 4 percent of the female adults are smokers, with the two figures combined to exceed 320 million people. A relevant survey shows that about 2,000 people die of smoking-related diseases each day.
In the opinion of an official with the Ministry of Health, China is faced with many difficult problems concerning the smoking-control work, such as the close relationship between tobacco production and consumption and the national economy, the lack of a good social environment, cigarette smuggling. The health department is losing no time to formulate relevant tactics to stop and curb tobacco use.
