China Preserves Wetlands with International Aid

China has got funding from the Global Environment Found (GEF) for protecting biodiversity on four of its wetlands.

The five-year wetland preservation project will be implemented jointly by China and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with 14.28 million US dollars from GEF. It is believed that it is the first time the GEF has funded a wetland preservation project.

In addition to the funding, GEF will also provide some equipment and materials for the project.

The project aims to find out the best ways to preserve ecological balance on the wetlands, and the experience may later be extended to other countries.

The four wetlands are: the marshes on the Sanjiang Plain in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China; the beaches in Yancheng of Jiangsu Province, east China; the marshes in Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, central China; and highland marshes on the border between Sichuan and Gansu provinces, northwest China.

The wetland, the forest and the ocean, are the three main ecosystems on earth. Wetlands are home to a great variety of plants and animals.
