The Tibet Mobile Telecommunications Company was inaugurated in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous region on June 9.
Pagbalha Geleg Namgyai, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the opening day ceremony.
The company will be instrumental in spurring economic development in Tibet and the central government's strategy of accelerating development of western China, said Phagsqodeng, the company's general manager.
Tibet now has 40,000 mobile phone users -- double the figure from last year. Revenue from the mobile phone sector totaled 35 million yuan in the first five months of this year, up 93 percent over the same period of 1999.
