The Joint Investment Trade Conference between Guangxi and Vietnam Ministry of Industry was held from April 25 to 26 in Hanoi. Attended at the conference were the 110 delegates of Vietnam enterprises and 160 people from the Guangxi Economic & Trade Delegation. This is the biggest trade talks ever held between the two countries since the normalization of Sino-Vietnamese diplomatic relations in 1991.
Wang Hanming, Vice-chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the vice minister of industry of Vietnam attended and made speeches at the meeting.
Since 1996, thanks to the adoption of a series of preferential policies for developing border trade, the general trade, border trade, foreign capital utilization, and international economic and technological cooperation are on the rise. In 1999, the trade volume of border trade between Guangxi and Vietnam set a new record high of 3.51 billion yuan. The enterprises in Guangxi make active investment in Vietnam, setting up many sole-funded enterprises or joint ventures in the textile, pharmaceutical, plastic products, machinery and tourism fields. At present, eight border towns or counties with 12 border ports approved by the state are opened to the outside and mutual visit spots for border residents up to 25, and still the enterprises with the right of small amount border trade also up to 172. The ever-increasing contacts have rendered the border trade between the two sides to develop from a primitive one into an all-around border trade compatible with international practice. The diversified forms of small amount border trade and barter trade with state-owned ones to play the major part and participated by the collectives and individuals have already developed into a combination of agriculture, industry, technology and commerce with various settlement forms.
During the trade talks 60 enterprises of Guangxi brought up 100 items, including import and export, engineering contract, investment, leasing, technological transfer that involved the machinery, textile, light industry, sugar making, paper making, construction material, automobile and motorcycle as well as smelting industries. This is an active stance taken by Guangxi's enterprises in order to make themselves adapt to the restructuring of economy and developing international market.
