Fallacy of Taiwan Independence

The People's Daily carries a by-lined article Wednesday to refute statements made by Taiwan's Annette Lu, advocating independence for the island.

The article says that during the regional elections in Taiwan, pro-independence figures promised to "ignore the issue of reunification or independence" and to "improve cross-straits relations" in order to win support of the Taiwan public by means of deception.

"Even before she took office, the die-hard pro-independence element Annette Lu showed her true colors and in public preached her notorious remarks on the independence of Taiwan," the article says.

In a recent interview with a Hong Kong media organization, Lu, a member of the Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party, said that historically, the mainland and Taiwan have been "remote relatives," while geographically they are "close neighbors." She said "let's not quarrel about the issue over reunification or independence," and that she "will do everything possible to establish the relations of remote relatives and close neighbors between Taiwan and China."

Commenting on her remarks, the article exclaims, "How ludicrous Lu's logic is!"

"She is showing a friendly face while harboring evil intentions to alienate the relations of the people across the Taiwan straits, " it points out.

"Taiwan has been an integral part of China throughout history, the Taiwan people are inseparable family members of the Chinese nation, and people across the straits are in the same family -- not remote relatives or neighbors," the article says.

Lu's behavior has been "too crude and unprofessional," provoking a dispute across the straits, but still she says innocently that she "didn't offend China," the article points out.

It goes on to expose another illogical stance taken by Lu, who claimed that Taiwan is "a scapegoat of the historical duel between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party," and since the Kuomintang is no longer in power, Taiwan is thus able to have a "special relationship" with China, which is "one China and one Taiwan."

The article counter-attacks her position, saying that Lu overlooked one important factor: The change of regional leaders of Taiwan does not alter the fact that the island is part of Chinese territory.

"The hostile situation stemming from an unfinished civil war will not come to an end just because the Kuomintang ruling party in Taiwan has stepped down," the article says.

The change of leadership in Taiwan simply represents the defeat of the Kuomintang rule, and doesn't mean that the pro-independence elements have been victorious, it says, noting that it is just a result of Lee Teng-hui's "slick politics."

Lu's lunatic remarks give off a dangerous signal when the development trend of the cross-straits relations is at a crossroads, the article warns.

It says that the Chinese people will never give full play to the independence elements, and the new leaders in Taiwan must have a clear and correct idea of the situations they are about to face. "We will be closely watching the course they follow," the article says.
