Annette Lu Betrays Motherland

Monday's People's Daily carries a commentary strongly refuting statements made by Annette Lu, a member of the Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party, advocating independence for Taiwan.

On completion of the Taiwan regional election, the Chinese government and leaders reiterated that peaceful reunification should be based on the one-China principle, says the commentary. "We are paying close attention to which direction the new leaders of Taiwan will take," continues the commentary.

Some extremists who do not want to see the cross-straits relationship head toward peaceful reunification have intentionally fabricated various stories aimed to separate China. Annette Lu is the most notorious, it says.

In a recent interview with a Hong Kong cable TV station, she openly advocated Taiwan independence, which challenged the one-China policy and stirred animosity between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

Lu wrongly advocated Taiwan independence and even tried to rationalize Japan's occupation of Taiwan.

Lu said that the relationship between the mainland and Taiwan should be that of "remote relatives" in terms of history and when geographical factors are considered, their relationship is that of "close neighbors."

The commentary says that the allegation meant to deny the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory, and that the people of Taiwan are an inseparable part of the Chinese nation.

The commentator also asks Annette Lu to learn the elementary knowledge of Chinese history and geography, all of which clearly shows that Taiwan is a part of China, and that this can never be changed. The article points out that the temporary separation between Taiwan and the mainland will inevitably come to an end. Anyone attempting to carry out a Taiwan independence policy is doomed to fail, it says.

The commentary cites President Jiang Zemin as saying that the basis and prerequisite for talks and dialogue between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is the one-China principle that can not be challenged, no matter who is the leader in Taiwan. Only on the basis of the one-China principle could Taiwan have a bright future. Annette Lu challenges the 1.25 billion Chinese people who stand behind the one-China principle, and she intends to push Taiwan into the abyss of war, it warns.

"Are the 2.3 million Taiwan people at ease that such a lunatic advocate of Taiwan independence, who could bring disaster to Taiwan at any time, has taken office as a Taiwan leader?" asks the commentary.
