China Provides Humanitarian Aid to DPRK Nationals

China has provided humanitarian aid to nationals of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ( DPRK) who illegally crossed the border into Chinese territory in recent years, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi.

Sun made the remark at a regular press conference in Beijing on April 11, in response to a question about this situation.

He said the since the DPRK met with some temporary economic difficulties, a small number of DPRK citizens illegally crossed the border into China because of economic hardships in recent years.

China, as a close neighbor of the DPRK, has provided humanitarian support to those DPRK nationals in line with the traditional friendship between the two countries, he said. But according to international law and their purpose for crossing the border into China, Sun said, they are not refugees. China has always treated them in a friendly manner and from a humanitarian perspective, and repatriated them in accordance with common international practice, he noted.

Sun said that China has always dealt with this issue from the perspective of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
