Eastern China Scenic City to Clean Rivers

This scenic city in east China's Zhejiang Province will become more beautiful as efforts have begun to clean Hangzhou's ten urban rivers in the next three years.

The city will invest nearly 500 million yuan for the project, the city government said, adding that the water quality of the rivers will be greatly upgraded.

The ten rivers have a combined length of 38.8 kilometers, and are all linked to the Qiantang River via the Grand Canal which extends 1,789 km connecting Hangzhou with Beijing up in the north.

Local authorities say that the rivers must be improved for tourism development in the city, as Hangzhou plays host to tens of millions of tourists annually.

To beautify the city, Hangzhou also will demolish more than one million square meters of shabby houses, sources said.
