China to Celebrate Centennial Discovery of Dunhuang CavesChina plans to celebrate the centennial of the Dunhuang rock caves, exhibiting replicas of stolen treasures for the first time.The Ministry of Culture, Gansu provincial government and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) will organize centennial celebrations in July. An international academic symposium and a weekly tour of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang will also be held. At a news briefing Tuesday, Li Zhong'an, Gansu's vice governor, said that the celebrations will include a commemorative meeting, relic exhibitions, art performances and tourist activities. Dunhuang has 492 caves, with 45,000 square meters of frescos, 2, 415 painted statues and five wooden-structured caves. The Mogao Grottoes contain priceless paintings, sculptures, some 50,000 Buddhist scriptures, historical documents, textiles, and other relics that first stunned the world in the early 1900s. The Mogao Grottoes were listed on the World Heritage List in 1987. More than 200 scholars from abroad will take part in the celebrations in July.
