Macao SAR to Strengthen Ties with EU

In an attempt to enhance ties with the European Union (EU), Macao Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah will visit Portugal, France and Belgium in the first half of the year, local newspapers reported on Tuesday.

The fact that the chief executive chooses the three countries as the destinations of his first foreign visits since he was officially sworn in on December 20 last year demonstrates that the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government values its relations with EU, local media reported.

Portugal holds the union's rotating presidency of the EU in the first half of the year and France takes the turn to be the group's president state in the second half of the year. Edmund Ho expressed the belief that EU countries will grant visa-free access to holders of Macao SAR passport before his tour which is expected to take place at the end of May, as related work is well under way.

The chief executive also plans to visit Japan and Singapore in the second half of the year. Both countries have close tourist and economic ties with Macao.
