China Overseas Chinese Asked to Work for Nation's Reunification

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen January 26 called on overseas Chinese to actively promote China's reunification by adhering to the principles of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems".

Qian made the remarks at a new year reception hosted by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committees of the National People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and other associations.

"Complete unification of the country is a common aspiration of all Chinese," Qian said. He urged people across the Taiwan Straitsto further promote cooperation and exchanges in economical, cultural and other areas, and fight against separatist forces.

Qian extended New Year's greetings on behalf of the central government to overseas Chinese from all walks of life, including compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries, saying that they have made positive contribution to China's development and reunification cause.

Qian reviewed major achievements China made in 1999 and said the year 2000 was the last year to accomplish the ninth five-year plan and other important targets during the 21st century.

He urged all the Chinese, both at home and overseas, to unite in making greater contributions to the country's modernization drive in the new year.
