Sunday, January 16, 2000, updated at 10:34(GMT+8) China Macao SAR Chief Executive Visits PLA Garrison Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), visited the Macao garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army(PLA) on Saturday. In company with Liu Yuejun and He Xianshu, commander and political commissar, respectively, of the PLA garrison stationed in Macao SAR, Edmund Ho passed through the orderly alignments of the PLA officers and men. "The troops have won the support and respect of Macao residentsas soon as they stepped into Macao," the chief executive said. "The troops are a powerful guarantee for national sovereignty and territorial integrity and for the long-term prosperity and stability in Macao." He noted that the PLA officers and men have a clear understanding of the Macao SAR Basic Law, the Garrison Law and other laws of the Macao SAR, expressing the belief that they will be able to shoulder the duty of defense in the Macao SAR. "You will surely get the support and cooperation of the SAR government in exercising your duty," he said. Liu Yuejun said that the PLA troops will seriously implement the principle of "one country, two systems" and respect the work of the Macao SAR government and the lifestyle of local residents. "The garrison troops intend to establish a relationship of mutual support and trust with the SAR government," the commander said.
