Friday, December 10, 1999, updated at 10:32(GMT+8) Culture Commemorative Coins Issued to Mark Macao's Return to China The Commemorative Gold and Silver Coins (3rd Set) have been issued in Macao on December 9 to mark Macao's return to China. The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, started to issue the successive 3-set gold and silvercoins in 1997, to celebrate the motherland's resumption of the exercise of sovereignty over Macao and the founding of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). The last set consists of one piece of 5 ounce gold coin, one piece of 1/2 ounce gold, one piece of 5 ounce silver coin, and one piece of 1 ounce silver coin. All are legal tender coins of China. All coins bear the common design on the obverse, which depicts "the People's Republic of China" in Chinese, the issuing year, the Tian An Men with brilliant rays surrounded and peonies. The 5 ounce gold coin and 5 ounce silver coin are the same in the reverse design: Macao's scenery, the SAR's logo, face value and the text "in Commemoration of the Founding of the Macao Special Administrative Region in Chinese, Portuguese and English.
