China Social Stability Continues as China's Top Priority

Wei Jianxing, one of China's top seven policy makers, called on all Party committees and governments at all levels to spare no effort to maintain social stability.

Addressing the closing ceremony of a two-day political and law conference, Wei, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the ruling Chinese

Communist Party, praised the achievements in politics and the legal field over the past year, especially the crack-down on terrorism by overseas and domestic hostile forces and various

criminal activities.

Next year will bring the change of a century and is the last year of China's ninth Five-Year plan period. Therefore, it is of great importance to ably handle tasks in the political and law

field, Wei said.

Though China enjoys economic and social progress, political stability and national unity, there still exist factors jeopardizing national safety and social stability, he said.

It is necessary to crack down on terrorism by hostile forces at home and abroad, be on guard against activities of Falun Gong cult and other sects, and help the majority of Falun Gong practitioners to mend their ways while attacking illegal activities of key members, he said.

"We should continue the fight against all kinds of criminal and economic activities with the stress on violent and organized crimes and major cases," he said.

Wei call for effective measures to prevent juvenile delinquency and create a favorable social environment for the growth of youngsters.

Referring to problems among law enforcement officials, Wei said that political and law departments should clean their own houses, be honest, and improve the practice of law enforcement. Those who have violated the law will be punished according to the law.

Luo Gan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, urged all participants to fully understand the importance of stability and prepare for safe celebrations for

Macao's return to the motherland and in the new year. (Xinhua-PD)
